The inside story
Perched above the Vigo Estuary, this stone-etched stronghold stands as a quiet reminder of the city’s military past. Built in the 17th century to guard the coastline, the fortress extends into the Galician Sea, blurring the line between land and water.
Today, the fortress is less about warfare and more about perspective. Its thick walls and bastions offer eye-catching views over the city, the harbour and the Cíes Islands further afield. Walking along the ramparts, it’s easy to imagine lookout posts scanning the horizon while cannons stood ready below.
