Did you know that Michelangelo, still an adolescent, was noticed by the great Lorenzo the Magnificent and that for some time he lived in Palazzo Medici as he was considered almost a family member? The relationship was not always idyllic - a few decades later another member of the same family tried to kill him!
Where did the artist hide in fear? Right under the New Sacristy of San Lorenzo, which he was building. The Medici Chapels, which include the New Sacristy and the Princes' Chapels, are the glorious mausoleum of the Medici family and contain one of Michelangelo's most famous sculptural cycles: Dusk, Dawn, Day and Night.
You will also visit the Chapel of the Princes, a sumptuous octagonal room designed to house the tombs of the Grand Dukes. You will be amazed by so much luxury since most of it is covered with precious stones and marbles.
After the Medici Chapels, crossing Piazza del Duomo you'll reach the second museum, the Bargello, and discover other works by Michelangelo. The building was built in 1255 and houses masterpieces by renowned artists such as Donatello, Luca della Robbia, Cellini, Brunelleschi and Verrocchio.
Admire the Bacchus and Tondo Pitti by Michelangelo in this incredible place that holds an important record: here, on November 30, 1786, for the first time a state, the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, abolished the death penalty.
