The inside story
Sal Rei is Boa Vista's capital, sitting on the island's northwestern coast. Named after the Portuguese for "King's Salt", the town grew from the salt trade that once shaped the island's economy. Today, it's a lovely place to wander, with small boutiques, local craft shops and market stalls selling handmade jewellery, artwork, woven crafts and keepsakes made from seashells and other natural materials.
The town's waterfront is where most of the action happens. It's lined with bars and eateries serving freshly caught fish, grilled lobster and Cape Verdean favourites like cachupa, a traditional slow-cooked stew. The promenade is made for a leisurely stroll, with views across the bay to the tiny islet of Ilheu de Sal Rei. Nearby Praia de Estoril is a popular spot for swimming, kitesurfing and watersports, making it easy to combine a little sightseeing with some time on the sand.
