Discover the Saumur castle which is undoubtedly the most emblematic symbol of the town. This castle is an old fortress that was converted into a palace by the Dukes of Anjou in the 14th and 15th centuries.
This castle then became the residence of the town’s governors under Louis XIV and Louis XV, a prison, then a depot for arms and munitions. In 1906, the castle was bought by the town to house the municipal museum labelled Museum of France. This museum is divided into two sections: the Decorative Arts section and the Horses section.
Finally, you can visit the terraces of the castle from where you will have a magnificent panoramic view over the city and the Loire River.
