Musement is dedicated to bringing you the best, which is why we're introducing you to the TUI Collection designed by TUI, the world leader in travel.
To beat Morocco's searing summer heat, the Berber people pack-up and head into the High Atlas Mountains. Follow your guide along this timeless trail for a walking tour. Get a feel for local life as you journey through the Ait Oucheg valley, visit typical villages and try a tagine lunch, too. Ali, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘The tagine is a traditional Berber invention, and the word refers to both the cooking pot and the meal. Vegetables and usually some lamb or chicken are mixed with spices and other flavours such as lemons or apricots and cooked low and slow. The conical lid keeps most of the steam in for maximum flavour.'
Whisked to the starting point by coach, you'll set off trekking through the green pastures of the Ait Oucheg valley, learning about Berber culture along the way. Pass the otherworldly rock formations of Aguerd Gorge, and stop by Setti Fatma – a colourful village where open-air cafés line the banks of the Ourika River. We'll stop a for a cup of mint tea, before we make tracks to the tiny town of Imi n'Taddart.
Here, we'll have a look inside a typical Berber tent with its bright rugs and comfy floor cushions. Ali says, ‘A traditional Berber tent had to be easy to pack away and carry to the next location, so you'll notice there's not much solid furniture. The external tent layer is usually made with goat and camel hair woven together.' Finally, you'll be treated to a traditional tagine lunch cooked by a friendly local host. It's a great way to round off the day.
