Cefalù

Sand-kissed medieval streets, and a dramatic rocky headland make Cefalù one of Sicily’s most captivating seaside towns. Set between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the towering La Rocca, it blends centuries of history with a relaxed coastal atmosphere and some of the island’s most picturesque scenery. You can spend your time wandering narrow lanes, swimming in clear waters, or lingering over long lunches in lively piazzas. Cefalù suits you if you enjoy beach escapes with plenty of history and authentic Sicilian character.

1. Visit Cefalù Cathedral and the old town

At the heart of the town stands the Cefalù Cathedral, a magnificent Norman cathedral built in the 12th century and recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Inside, you'll find dazzling Byzantine mosaics, while outside, narrow medieval streets lead to cafés, boutiques, and hidden courtyards. It's the perfect area to explore on foot and soak up Cefalù's laid-back atmosphere.

2. Climb La Rocca for panoramic views

Towering above the town, La Rocca rewards those who make the climb with sweeping views across the coastline and terracotta rooftops below. The trail passes the remains of ancient fortifications and the medieval Temple of Diana before reaching viewpoints that stretch across the Tyrrhenian Sea. It's one of the best ways to appreciate Cefalù's spectacular setting.

3. Relax on Cefalù Beach

Just steps from the historic centre, Cefalù's long sandy beach is ideal for spending a leisurely afternoon by the sea. You can swim in the clear, shallow water, hire a paddleboard, or simply stroll along the shoreline with La Rocca rising behind the town. As the day winds down, the seafront comes alive with restaurants serving fresh seafood, pasta, and Sicilian specialities against a backdrop of colourful fishing boats.
