Fossilised in time by the volcanic eruption of Mt Vesuvius, a visit to Herculaneum is just like stepping through an open-air history book. This bite-size tour will take you to and from the site in just one afternoon, with enough time to explore the historical relics on a guided walk and enjoy a 3-course lunch.
Everything is so well-preserved in Herculaneum that you can walk down the streets pretty much exactly as the Romans would have done over 2,000 years ago. Your guide will show the original timbers in buildings and clay pots stored as they would have been at the time the city was tragically buried in volcanic rock.
And that's not all – the public baths still feature their frescoes and mosaics, and there's the shop and gymnasium to peek into, too. Not to be missed are the skeletons – which were preserved by ash – of victims who sought shelter in boathouses. And when you're finished exploring, we'll top it all with a 3-course lunch.
