The inside story
Born in 1761 Madame Tussaud, previously known as Marie Gosholtz, started out modeling the philosopher and author, Francois Voltaire, and from there her destiny was sealed. She led a dramatic and somewhat turbulent life, becoming art tutor to the sister of King Louis XVI and living at the Royal Court in Versailles, before being imprisoned during the French Revolution. Upon her release, she deigned to show her allegiance to the Revolution by creating death masks in rememberance of those who had been killed during it. With her own collection in tow, and one she inherited from Dr Philippe Curtuis she toured Britain and settled upon making London her base in 1802. Whilst her collection was moved in 1884 by her grandsons after her death, the foundations didn't go far, and today you'll find her vast collection and legacy on Marylebone Road.
With hundreds of lifesize wax models, from royalty, to YouTube stars to sporting heroes, this fantastic collection of sculptures is sure to have something for all the family.
