One-day tour to discover Camargue
- Ride through the salt marshes in Aigues-Mortes
- Stroll in the charming village of Saintes-Maries de la Mer
- Discover the well-preserved Roman monuments in Arles
Enjoy the intimate small-group tour experience and immerse yourself in the Camargue heritage during this fullday minibus tour.
Before flowing into Mediterranean sea, the Rhône river creates a delta now classified as Natural Park of Camargue : the main objective of the park is to protect the fauna and flora and also preserve agricultural activity and local cultural heritage.
Drive to the fascinating medieval city of Aigues-Mortes : with its crenelated wall with 5 towers and 10 fortified gates, it is considered as the purest example of 13th-century military architecture. At the exit of the city stretch 10,000 hectars of salt marshes : discover how salt is harvested by the « saunier », the salt worker, and find out about the specific pink colour of the seawater during a 1- hour train ride (ticket included).
Free time for lunch (not included) in Aigues-Mortes.
On the way to Saintes-Maries de la Mer, cross over the Petit Rhône river by using the Bac du Sauvage ferry (cable ferry).
Free time in the village of Les Saintes-Maries de la Mer located on the sea-shore, famous for its massive fortified church sheltering the reliquary containing the relics of St Sara. From centuries, the city has been object of a cult attracting pilgrims from afar. Take the opportunity to climb up to the paved watchpath (with extra-charge) which encircles the church roof and enjoy an unforgettable view on the sea and the Camargue plain. You might also simply wish to spend some relaxing time on the beach and take a refreshing bath in the Mediterranean sea.
You will then head to Arles, driving on the Grande Camargue area. Discover the vast and flat marshy land populated by an exceptional fauna like egrets, grey herons, swans and majestuous pink flamingoes, black bulls and white horses. Your guide will stop here and there for you to picture them in their natural environment.
Free time in Arles, the rice capital, also deeply linked to the Camargue culture : visit the Roman Amphitheater (entrance not included) also called Arenes and in which bullfights and Course Camarguaise take place each year.
