The inside story
The Arlington National Cemetery located in Arlington County, Virginia, is the biggest military cemetery in the United States of America. Just across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C., the 624-acre cemetery was established during the Civil War and is under control by the United States Department of the Army.
Back in 1802, the Arlington Estate was originally owned by George Washington Parke Custis, the adopted grandson of former President George Washington. After Custis passed, his estate was inherited by his daughter Mary Anna, who happened to be married to U.S. Army officer Robert E. Lee.
