The inside story
The POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews is located in the Muranów district which was mainly occupied by the Jewish community during World War II and later became the site of the Warsaw Ghetto. Today, the museum stands in a square overlooking the Monument to the Ghetto Heroes which commemorates the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising of 1943. Inside visitors will discover the 1000 years long Polish Jewish history up to modern times.
The idea for the building was originally conceived in 1993 at the Jewish Historical Institute, but wouldn't take form until 2007 when the first stone was laid. The modern structure designed by Finnish architect Rainer Mahlamäki features a mix of copper and glass. The stunning museum celebrated its inauguration on April 19, 2013, followed by its main exhibition later opening in October 2014. Less than a year later POLIN won the prestigious award for European Museum of the Year in April 2016.
