The inside story
The Royal Chapel of Granada (Capilla Real de Granada) is one of the most important places of interest in the city. Located inside the Cathedral of Santa María de la Encarnación, the chapel houses the mortal remains of Catholic Monarchs. Queen Isabella I and King Ferdinand ordered its construction in 1504 and it was built between 1505 and 1517 in Isabelline Gothic style under the direction of Enrique Egas.
The great main altarpiece is considered one of the first plateresque altarpieces in Spain and its iconography is structured around three main thematic axes: religious, political and territorial unity. Also noteworthy is the Main Grille, the work of the master Bartolomé, and the Renaissance bars that close the chapels of Santa Cruz and San Ildefonso.
