The inside story

Palace Square is the central square of St. Petersburg, and one of the major landmarks of Russia. The square is also known as "Winter Palace," for its most famous building, which was constructed between 1754-1762. The square connects the main street, Nevsky Prospekt, with Palace Bridge and leads to Vasilievsky Island.

Starting from the 1700s, Winter Palace served as the residence for the Russian Emperors. The Alexander Column, named after Emperor Alexander I who reigned from 1801-1825, is located in the centre of the square. It was raised in 1834 after the Russians victory over Napoleon and the French, when the French army tried invading Russia. Many other historical events occurred in the square such as the Bloody Sunday massacre and parts of the October Revolution of 1917.

The buildings around Palace Square are some of the city's most magnificent buildings, including different architectural styles. Winter Palace, or the Hermitage Museum today, is designed in the luxurious Baroque-Style, while the General Staff Building on the other side of the square is designed of the Empire style, consisting of an arch. The headquarters of the Guard corps is a combination of the two, representing a classic architectural style.

The square is open every day from 10am to 6pm for its visitors. Hundreds of thousands of tourists and citizens come visit each month. Book a guided tour through the square and learn more about the historical events that took place in the square and its different architectural styles.
