On the largest Bavarian lake, Chiemsee, you’ll take a boat ride to Herreninsel, the ‘island of men’ that got its name from the convent of Augustinian canons that was once found there.
You'll visit Ludwig II’s castle that was built as an identical replica of the Palace of Versailles. The Royal Castle of Herrenchiemsee was built in this splendid position by king Ludwig II and construction started in 1878.
The death of the forty-year-old sovereign in 1886 meant that the project was never completed. After visiting the castle, you’ll continue by boat to Fraueninsel, the isle of women, to visit a Benedictine church and take a walk on the island.
