If there's one must-see in Crete, it's the Palace of Knossos – the island's most popular attraction. Edyta, one of our local guides, says, ‘Knossos is where Europe's first civilisation began 4,000 years ago. It's amazing to see the different rooms from the Minoan period, as well as the aqueduct and the clay jars made by the Minoans.' A live dance performance is also in store, as well as a guided walk around Crete's buzzing capital, Heraklion.
The tour kicks off at Knossos Palace, where your guide will give you the lowdown on the ancient myths and kings as you discover the throne room and royal apartments. What's more, your visit contributes to the palace's upkeep, and with fast-track access, there's no waiting around in queues on this tour. Next up is a Minoan show alongside some typical Cretan snacks. Edyta tells us: ‘The Minoans loved dancing and you'll see traditional dances at the show.' Then journey back to the Minoan days with a 3D video that reconstructs the palace, giving you a taste of how it looked in the past.
In the afternoon there's a guided walk around Heraklion, where you'll discover the city's most important landmarks. See the Venetian lion fountain, a 17th-century monument and significant reference point for locals. Enjoy free time for shopping at the open-air market, where you can mingle with locals and sample fresh produce. If shopping's not your thing, you can end the day with a relaxing stroll around the Venetian harbour.
