Three of ancient Iona's most important archaeological sites lie conveniently within a 25km radius. This guided tour of the ruins of Priene, Milet and Didyma will give you great insight into the treasures of Ionian antiquity.
First up is Priene, located on the slopes of Mt Mycale with views over the River Meander below. Spend time learning of its liberation by Alexander the Great and exploring its famous Temple of Athena, the assembly house and theatre. Next, head to the Didyma sanctuary archaeological site, whose Temple of Apollo was one of the marvels of the ancient world.
After lunch in Didyma, we'll move on to the ancient city of Miletus. It founded more colonies than any other Greek city and was a thriving commercial hub before its harbour silted over. It is home to the well-preserved 15,000-seat theatre as well as the ruins of a stadium. St Paul is said to have preached here several times in the 1st century.
